Please join us to hear from Dr. Golian, cardiologist and electrophysiologist, discuss atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment!

 

Dr. Mehrdad Golian, MD is a cardiologist and invasive electrophysiologst at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He is currently the Deputy Quality Officer at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Director of the Atrial Fibrillation Clinic. In this seminar, Dr. Golian will discuss atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment, addressing the following questions:

 

  1. What is the prevalence of atrial fibrillation, and what are the risk factors for developing atrial fibrillation?

  2. What is the association of atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment?

  3. What treatment options are available for atrial fibrillation?

Le vieillissement s'accompagne de changements dans de nombreuses façons dont nous percevons le monde, agissons et traversons notre vie. Nos processus cognitifs, notre façon de penser, de souvenir et de prendre des décisions, ont également tendance à fluctuer avec l'âge. L'exposé de Jamie se concentrera sur des parties spécifiques du cerveau, dans une zone appelée lobes temporaux médians, qui soutient la mémoire épisodique. Certaines de ces régions cérébrales deviennent plus petites avec l'âge, mais notre cerveau est suffisamment plastique pour compenser ces changements structurels. Alors que certaines régions rétrécissent, d'autres régions peuvent travailler plus fort pour maintenir nos capacités de mémoire.

In this session, we will explore how people can connect across generations. The session will be held by Floris Van Vugt, who is starting his career as a university professor, and Rhona Achtman, who is a retired physiotherapist. Both are actively practicing Authentic Relating.

We will share our thoughts, experiences and challenges, and based on these, we offer a number of interactive exercises that all are invited to participate in.

This event is a joint collaboration between the Wisdom Exchange Project and McGill University Research Centre for Studies in Aging. Sivaniya Subramaniapillai will present her doctoral research on the role of protective lifestyle and social factors in promoting healthy living and the importance of investigating individual differences, such as sex/gender, for an individualized approach to healthy living. Make sure to tune in to have a lively discussion about the important role that individual differences and our environment have in shaping our cognitive health!
